Introduction
The profound mystery of Jesus Christ fulfilling the Law (Matt. 5:17) reveals a radical transformation within the framework of Kabbalah, specifically in the distinction between the Old and New Covenants. In the Old Covenant, the Nogah shell (קליפת נוגה)—a mixture of good and evil—was tolerated as a necessary component of ascent. However, in the New Covenant, through the perfect atonement of the Messiah, the shell of Nogah is removed at each rung, allowing for the manifestation of perfect Hashmal (חשמל)—the purified, luminous essence of divine revelation. This paper explores how Jesus’ fulfillment of the Law corresponds with the elevation of the soul beyond the limitations imposed by the kelipot, enabling full union with the Divine Presence.
The Nature of Nogah and Its Role in the Old Covenant
In classical Kabbalah, Nogah is an intermediary force between light and darkness, representing a mixture of holiness and impurity. It is the layer through which the righteous in the Old Covenant had to ascend but could never fully discard. The Torah, in its legalistic expression, tolerated Nogah because humanity was still under the governance of the Yetzer HaRa (evil inclination), and the purification process was incomplete.
Moses, the receiver of the Torah, led the people to Sinai, where the revelation came in fire and darkness (Exod. 20:18). This duality reflected the presence of Nogah—light wrapped in concealment, where the kelipot still had a hold over human ascent. The sacrificial system provided temporary purification, but the vessels remained tainted by the necessary existence of the mixed shell.
Jesus and the Fulfillment of the Law: Removing Nogah
Jesus’ fulfillment of the Law was not merely an abolition of Mosaic commandments but the perfection of divine transmission, removing the need for Nogah as an intermediary shell. The New Covenant introduces a transformation wherein the Hashmal—the electrified presence of divine speech—becomes the direct conduit for each rung of ascent.
The Transition from Nogah to Pure Light
- From Mixed to Pure Light – “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). In the New Covenant, Jesus makes it possible for the righteous to ascend without contamination.
- Direct Hashmal Revelation – The Shekinah is no longer veiled by the limitations of Nogah but is directly accessible through Christ, who is the perfect vessel of divine light (John 1:14, Heb. 1:3).
- Transformation of the Inner Temple – “You are the temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor. 6:19). No longer needing external purification, the vessel itself is transformed, removing the necessity of Nogah as a filtering mechanism.
Hashmal in the New Covenant: The Pure Transmission of Divine Energy
Hashmal is a term found in Ezekiel’s vision of the divine chariot (Ezek. 1:27), representing a fiery, electrified brilliance—the pure divine speech unmediated by impurity. In the New Covenant, the removal of Nogah allows for an untainted reception of Hashmal at each rung.
The Threefold Purification Process in New Covenant Kabbalah
- Messianic Baptism (Fire & Water) – Initiates the cleansing from Nogah’s residual mixture, enabling the soul to receive untainted light.
- Renewal of the Mind (Rom. 12:2) – Transforms perception so that divine wisdom flows without the obstruction of Nogah’s confusion.
- Perfection of the Vessel (2 Cor. 3:18) – The righteous move from “glory to glory,” which is the circumcision of the heart’s foreskin and membrane, removing Nogah each rung up Jacob’s ladder of sapphire stones: Malkut to Yesod to Hod to Netzach to Tiferet to Gevurah to Hesed to Binah to Hokmah to Keter. That is one world, and we do this “worlds without end” as written by Apostle Paul—ascending in Ein Sof glory to glory forever up God’s Ladder of Glory. The Ladder is God, and it exists within God’s very person.
Conclusion: The Ultimate Elevation Beyond the Klippot
In the Old Covenant, Nogah remained a tolerated necessity, a vessel carrying divine sparks within its admixture of good and evil. However, the New Covenant, through the fulfillment of the Law by Jesus, eradicates Nogah’s entanglement, replacing it with the perfected Hashmal.
Key Implications for Kabbalistic Ascension in Christ
- The righteous no longer experience the struggle of mixed ascent but receive direct, unfiltered light.
- Transformation occurs within the vessel itself, removing the need for an external shell.
- The New Jerusalem paradigm (Rev. 21:23) emerges, where divine light fully illuminates without obstruction, completing the purpose of Torah through the higher revelation in Christ.
Thus, Jesus does not abolish the Torah—He fulfills it by transmuting the path from a mixture to pure, luminous Hashmal, enabling a return to the Father through untainted divine union. This is the essence of New Covenant Kabbalah: a full restoration to the Ohr Ein Sof, where the perfect fulfillment of the Law is experienced in unmediated divine presence.
