Manna from the Third Heaven [Shehaqim]

When I got to the manna millstones of the Shehaqim (3rd heaven where the manna is produced), and saw the manna everywhere, falling everywhere, overflowing everywhere,

I kept saying:

“What is it? What is it? What is this stuff?”

It turned out to be manna of the Shehaqim, the millstones of hod and Netsah.

According to the Book of Exodus (Exodus 16) and the Book of Numbers (Numbers 11), manna is described as a substance that appeared on the ground each morning except on the Sabbath. It was like coriander seed, white, and tasted like wafers made with honey.

The name “manna” is derived from the Hebrew phrase “מָן הוּא” (“man hu”), which translates to “What is it?” This reflects the Israelites’ initial reaction to the substance when they first saw it, not knowing what it was.

I had pity on your mourning and gave you manna for food; you ate messengers’ bread -2 Esdras 1:19

  • King James Version (KJV): “Then had I pity upon your mournings, and gave you manna to eat; so ye did eat angels’ bread.”
  • Good News Translation (GNT): “I was moved by your bitter groans and gave you manna, the bread of angels.”
  • New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE): “I pitied your groanings and gave you manna for food; you ate the bread of angels.”
