Hevel and the Meaninglessness of Under the Sun
“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless(Hebrew HEVEL), a chasing after the wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:14)
Today, we enter into the eternal wisdom of the Scriptures to understand what the King of Jerusalem, the Rabbi, conveys with all the rich wisdom of Ecclesiastes. The Hebrew word “hevel” is used thirty-one times in Ecclesiastes and is the central focus for the Teacher. Hevel is traditionally translated into English as “meaningless,” but it can also mean vapor, worthless, vanity, chaff, husk, kelipot, qlippoth, or no eternal value.
Ecclesiastes is perhaps the pinnacle of King Solomon’s wisdom. The twelve chapters impart the eternal wisdom of YHVH to repent and overcome all that is under the sun, all that is hevel. This means all thoughts, actions, and speech not from above the sun, where YHVH is, are utterly worthless. Hevel is the container of worthless works, thoughts, and speech that Moshiach Yeshua called “chaff for the fire.”
When we pray for sanctification, we pray for Moshiach Yeshua’s fire and judgment upon this hevel in our souls to be wise and think, speak, and do what is important to the realms of YHVH above the sun, where wisdom builds us up into; sapphire stone pavement. This is the kabbalah of Ecclesiastes, the wisdom of the Teacher of Jerusalem. May the wise pray for judgment and be wiser still.
Amen.
