Enduring Insults and Ascending: A Hidden Key to Glory
If you are mistreated — rejoice!
The worse you are mistreated by others, the faster you will go up, as long as you respond in righteousness.
Rebbe Nachman says:
“When a person hears himself insulted and his blood boils within him — and he overcomes his nature and remains silent — then the blood rises to the brain and strengthens the intellect. This is the aspect of ascending in understanding.”
Talmud, Gittin 36b:
“Those who are insulted but do not insult back, who hear their shame and do not respond, who act out of love and rejoice in suffering — concerning them the verse says:
‘But they that love Him shall be as the sun going forth in its might’ (Judges 5:31).”
Matthew 5:11–12 (BSB):
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.”
Romans 12:14 (BSB):
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
1 Peter 2:20 (BSB):
“But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.”
Luke 6:22–23 (BSB):
“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for great is your reward in heaven.”
