Created Angels and The Uncreated Angel YHVH

In the Old Testament, the phrase “Angel of the Lord” (or “Angel of YHVH”) is commonly used to refer to the Moshiach Jesus Christ. This name of God appears approximately 60 times in the Old Testament.

In the Old Testament, the “Angel of the Lord” is often associated with divine attributes, sometimes identified as a manifestation of God Himself. Here are some instances where the Angel of the Lord is associated with divine qualities and receives worship:

These scriptures all refer to the Angel of YHVH as God Himself incurring worship and reverential fear from our righteous forefathers of our Jewish faith.

Genesis 16:7-13: The Angel of the Lord appears to Hagar, promises that she will have a son, and speaks with authority. Hagar then calls the name of the Lord who spoke to her “You are the God who sees me.”

Genesis 22:11-12: The Angel of the Lord calls out to Abraham and stops him from sacrificing Isaac, saying, “Now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Exodus 3:2-6: The Angel of the Lord appears to Moses in the burning bush. The voice from the bush identifies itself as God, commanding Moses to take off his sandals because he is standing on holy ground.

Judges 6:11-24: The Angel of the Lord appears to Gideon and commissions him to deliver Israel. When Gideon realizes he has seen the Angel of the Lord, he builds an altar and names it “The Lord is Peace.”

Judges 13:3-22: The Angel of the Lord appears to Manoah and his wife to announce the birth of Samson. After the Angel ascends in a flame, Manoah says to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God!”

Why is this significant? Because our patriarch, by whom our faith is founded, worshipped an angel. Not a created angel, but the uncreated Angel of YHVH, the Spirit of Jesus Christ! This same Almighty God angel is the one leading Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys in the Book of Acts 16:7:

“When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.”

While we never worship angels or saints, we do worship the Angel of YHVH, the Spirit of Jesus Christ. May this revelatory study bless your inner man who has the potential of that same Angel who created the heavens, earth, and everything it is in. Amen.
