RLM TV FOCUS STUDY THE COUNTERFEIT FIVEFOLD

Exposing the Religious Spirit and Restoring the Ministry of Grace

A study drawn from the prophetic warnings of Bob Jones concerning the religious spirit, its restraints, and its counterfeit operation in the Church.

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.” — Ephesians 4:11

There is a profound difference between ministry produced by the Spirit of Christ and ministry produced by the religious soul.

Both can quote Scripture. Both can preach with zeal. Both can speak of holiness, truth, doctrine, correction, and obedience.

Yet one ministers life. The other produces bondage.

“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” — 2 Corinthians 3:6

Bob Jones warned that the religious spirit is so closely akin to the Holy Spirit that, if possible, it would deceive the very elect. He identified its primary weapons as religious restraints—soul-powered operations that bind God’s people rather than liberate them into the freedom of Christ.

This five-part framework is a reconstruction and synthesis of that teaching. It is not presented as a formal document published by Bob Jones, yet the pattern is piercing and accurate.

The religious spirit seeks to counterfeit the ministry of Christ through five primary restraints:

LEGALISM. JUDGMENT. CRITICISM. DEBATE. OPINION.

Wherever these replace the grace, revelation, love, liberty, and living voice of the Holy Spirit, a counterfeit government is established.

I. THE TRUE FIVEFOLD IS CHRIST MULTIPLIED

Before examining the counterfeit, we must see the genuine.

Ephesians 4 does not describe five religious professions. It describes the ministry of the ascended Christ distributed through His Body.

Jesus is the Apostle. Jesus is the Prophet. Jesus is the Evangelist. Jesus is the Shepherd. Jesus is the Teacher.

These ministries exist for one purpose:

“For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ… till we all come… to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” — Ephesians 4:12–13

Authentic fivefold ministry has measurable fruit: Christ formed in people.

It does not make saints increasingly dependent upon the minister. It equips them. It matures them. It unveils Christ. It teaches them to walk in the Spirit.

The counterfeit reverses every one of these purposes.

Instead of equipping, it restrains. Instead of unveiling Christ, it magnifies systems. Instead of maturity, it produces dependency. Instead of liberty, control. Instead of grace, performance. Instead of living revelation, dead knowledge.

This is the battlefield.

II. RESTRAINT ONE — LEGALISM

The Counterfeit Foundation

Legalism attempts to produce through external regulation what only the indwelling Spirit can produce through life.

Its central message is: Perform correctly, and then you will become acceptable.

Grace declares something radically different:

“He made us accepted in the Beloved.” — Ephesians 1:6

Legalism begins with human performance. Grace begins with divine acceptance.

Legalism says: DO → BECOME. The gospel says: RECEIVE → BECOME → WALK.

This does not make grace lawless.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” — Romans 8:2

Grace replaces external religious government with the government of Christ within.

Legalism can look holy. It can sound disciplined. It can quote commandments.

Yet if righteousness is being sought through human performance rather than the life of Christ, the center has already shifted away from grace.

The counterfeit apostolic spirit builds systems of control. The true apostolic spirit builds people upon Christ.

III. RESTRAINT TWO — CONDEMNING JUDGMENT

There is biblical discernment, and there is religious judgment. They are not the same.

Jesus said:

“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” — John 7:24

Righteous judgment sees through the eyes of Christ. Religious judgment sees through the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

It continually categorizes: good or bad, approved or rejected, spiritual or unspiritual, worthy or unworthy. It becomes obsessed with measuring everyone—except Christ.

This is especially dangerous in prophetic ministry.

The true prophetic spirit reveals the heart of God. The counterfeit prophetic spirit becomes an accuser.

Revelation 12 identifies Satan as “the accuser of our brethren.” Accusation can never become the governing atmosphere of New Covenant prophecy.

Prophecy may expose darkness. Prophecy may correct. Prophecy may warn.

But its normal operation is this:

“He who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.” — 1 Corinthians 14:3

The prophetic voice of Christ exposes darkness in order to bring people into light. The religious counterfeit exposes people in order to establish superiority.

That difference is enormous.

IV. RESTRAINT THREE — CRITICISM

Criticism is accusation disguised as discernment.

It specializes in finding what is wrong. It can enter a worship service and notice everything except God. It can hear an hour of truth and obsess over one imperfect sentence. It can observe a believer’s entire life and magnify one weakness.

Criticism feeds continually from deficiency. Grace sees according to redemption.

Paul gives the New Covenant standard:

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” — Ephesians 4:29

The test is simple: Does it impart grace?

True correction seeks restoration. Religious criticism seeks vindication.

True correction carries love. Criticism carries contempt.

True correction builds. Criticism consumes.

Once criticism is normalized as spirituality, an entire community can be trained to feed upon one another’s weaknesses. That is not shepherding. That is accusation wearing religious clothing.

V. RESTRAINT FOUR — DEBATE AND ARGUMENT

There is a legitimate defense of the faith. The apostles reasoned from Scripture. Paul confronted error. Jude called us to contend earnestly for the faith.

The problem is not thoughtful disagreement. The problem is when contention becomes our nature.

“A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient.” — 2 Timothy 2:24

The religious spirit loves the battlefield of argument because the ego can experience victory without experiencing transformation.

A person can win an argument and lose love. Prove doctrine and quench the Spirit. Demonstrate superior knowledge while manifesting an inferior nature.

“Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.” — 1 Corinthians 8:1

The true evangelist announces good news. The counterfeit turns revelation into an intellectual weapon.

The goal subtly shifts from “How can I reveal Christ?” to “How can I prove that I am right?”

The gospel is not merely an argument to win. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

VI. RESTRAINT FIVE — OPINION

Perhaps the subtlest restraint is opinion.

Opinion becomes dangerous when human interpretation is enthroned as divine certainty.

Tradition says: “We have always done it this way.” Pride says: “My interpretation must be right.” Religion says: “God cannot operate outside the boundaries I understand.”

Jesus confronted this directly:

“Making the word of God of no effect through your tradition.” — Mark 7:13

Tradition itself is not automatically evil. Interpretation is unavoidable. The danger occurs when human understanding becomes incapable of being corrected by God.

Every genuine minister remains a disciple. The true apostle remains under the Chief Apostle. The true prophet remains under the Spirit of prophecy. The true teacher remains under the Teacher. The true shepherd remains under the Chief Shepherd.

When opinion takes the throne, revelation stops flowing.

VII. THE TWO FIVEFOLDS

THE TRUE Apostolic — establishes people in Christ and grace Prophetic — reveals the Father’s heart Evangelistic — announces liberating good news Pastoral — nourishes, protects, restores Teaching — feeds truth that produces Christlike maturity

THE COUNTERFEIT Legalism replaces spiritual government with external control Judgment replaces prophetic sight with condemnation Criticism replaces shepherding with fault-finding Debate replaces proclamation with contention Opinion replaces revelation with human tradition and intellectual certainty

These restraints frequently overlap and reinforce one another. Legalism generates judgment. Judgment generates criticism. Criticism generates argument. Argument entrenches opinion. Opinion produces more legalism.

It becomes a closed religious circuit.

VIII. THE TREE BEHIND THE COUNTERFEIT

This returns us to Eden.

There were two trees: The Tree of Life and The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

The religious spirit is powerful precisely because it does not always tempt with obvious evil. It tempts with religious knowledge of good and evil apart from living communion with God.

The serpent did not initially offer Adam and Eve atheism. He offered them knowledge independent of God’s life.

Religion can repeat the same mistake: knowing Bible verses without knowing the One speaking through them, understanding doctrines without drinking living water, possessing theological knowledge while remaining internally disconnected from grace.

“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” — John 5:39–40

Scripture is holy. But Scripture was never intended to replace communion with the One it reveals.

The destination of the Word is Christ.

IX. THE TEST IS FRUIT

Jesus gave the only reliable diagnostic:

“You will know them by their fruits.” — Matthew 7:16

Does the ministry produce greater love for Jesus? Does it impart grace? Does it produce humility and maturity? Does it create freedom to obey the Holy Spirit? Does it reconcile, heal, and reveal Christ? Does it produce the fruit of the Spirit?

Or does it continually produce fear, condemnation, suspicion, dependency, division, spiritual elitism, control, argument, and accusation?

Paul gives the clearest test of all:

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

Not lawlessness. Not moral chaos. Liberty under the government of Christ.

X. CAST OFF THE RELIGIOUS RESTRAINTS

The answer to the religious spirit is not rebellion against authority. It is not rejection of Scripture. It is not doctrinal carelessness. It is not replacing biblical truth with whatever we feel.

The answer is Jesus Christ Himself.

Return to the living Vine. Return to grace. Return to communion. Return to the Holy Spirit. Return to the Word illuminated by the Spirit. Return to love. Return to the simplicity that is in Christ.

The New Covenant does not merely remove restraints. It establishes a far greater government: the government of Christ within.

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us…” — Titus 2:11–12

Grace teaches. Grace disciplines. Grace transforms. Grace produces holiness from life rather than from death.

The religious spirit attempts to restrain the flesh externally. Grace crucifies the old man and produces the nature of Christ internally.

That is a radically different covenant.

XI. THE RESTORATION OF THE TRUE FIVEFOLD

God’s answer to counterfeit ministry is genuine ministry.

We need apostles burning with grace. Prophets who reveal the Father’s heart. Evangelists carrying truly good news. Shepherds who smell like sheep rather than institutions. Teachers whose revelation causes hearts to burn with Christ.

The fivefold was never designed to manufacture religious professionals. It exists “for the equipping of the saints.”

Its success is not measured by how indispensable the minister becomes. It is measured by how mature the saints become.

The true fivefold produces an equipped Body— a functioning, discerning, loving, Spirit-filled, mature Body increasingly displaying the fullness of Christ.

RLM TV FOCUS DECLARATION

We reject legalism without rejecting holiness. We reject condemnation without rejecting discernment. We reject criticism without rejecting loving correction. We reject carnal argument without rejecting truth. We reject enthroned opinion without rejecting sound doctrine.

We receive the ministry of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. We receive grace that teaches us. Truth that frees us. Prophecy that edifies us. Shepherding that restores us. Teaching that feeds us. And apostolic grace that establishes Christ within us.

The Church does not need a more sophisticated religious spirit. The Church needs the living Christ.

The counterfeit fivefold restrains. The true fivefold equips.

The counterfeit accuses. The true fivefold restores.

The counterfeit produces dependence upon men. The true fivefold matures the saints.

The counterfeit feeds from the Tree of Knowledge apart from communion. The true fivefold ministers the Tree of Life.

And the final objective of genuine ministry remains exactly what Paul declared:

“THE MEASURE OF THE STATURE OF THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST.”
