The Wisdom of Nefesh and Ruach
Apostle Brandon Barthrop · 9 September 2026
THE RUACH CREATURE FROM ABOVE
Losing the Lower Government to Live the Higher Life
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
— John 4:24
“That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
— John 3:6
There is a radical difference between having spiritual experiences while still living from the fallen Nefesh, and actually existing as a New Creation whose source, government, identity, and supply come from Above.
Jesus did not come merely to make the earthly Adam more religious.
He came to bring forth a New Humanity.
Paul reveals the mystery through the Two Adams:
“The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:47
This is more than a comparison between two historical men. At the level of Sod ha Sod, it unveils two orders of human existence:
First Adam → Earth → Nefesh-government → Self-supply → Death
Christ → Above → Ruach-government → Reception → Life
The Gospel therefore calls humanity into something far deeper than behavioral improvement.
It calls us to change the Source from which we live.
THE FIRST LAW
Genesis tells us:
“The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”
— Genesis 2:7
Adam is formed from adamah — the earth. Dust does not possess Life in itself. God breathes. Adam receives. Only then does humanity become:
נפש חיה
Nefesh Chayyah
a living being / living soul
The original Nefesh was not evil. Humanity was created as a glorious receiver of divine Life.
The tragedy begins when the receiver attempts to function independently of the Source.
The serpent redirects humanity toward what can be seen, desired, possessed, interpreted, and known independently. The Nefesh begins reaching outward rather than receiving from God. The vessel attempts to become its own fountain.
And the consequence is mavet — death.
The Fall therefore produces not merely sinful actions, but an entire earthbound mode of consciousness:
What do I see?
What do I feel?
What do I desire?
What do I fear?
What can I possess?
What do others think of me?
How can I preserve myself?
How can I establish my own righteousness?
This is Nefesh attempting to govern life from below.
It can even become religious.
A fallen Nefesh can memorize Scripture.
A fallen Nefesh can construct theology.
A fallen Nefesh can pursue religious status.
A fallen Nefesh can imitate holiness.
A fallen Nefesh can attempt obedience through fear.
Yet none of these activities make the Nefesh the Fountain.
The receiver remains the receiver.
THE UNCOMPROMISING DIAGNOSIS
Here the distinction must stay sharp.
Created Nefesh in Genesis 2:7 was not evil.
Fallen Nefesh operating apart from the government of God’s Ruach is radically corrupted and cannot become its own source of holiness.
Fallen Nefesh cannot sanctify fallen Nefesh.
Earth cannot manufacture Heaven.
The creature below cannot generate the Life that exists only in the One from Above.
This is why salvation requires something genuinely new.
Something from Above must enter the order below.
Romans 1 gives a terrifying picture of exchanged image:
“They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.”
— Romans 1:23
Humanity was created to bear God’s image. When humanity turns from the Fountain, the gaze descends:
Glory → mortal man → birds → beasts → creeping things
The movement is downward. The fallen Nefesh begins bearing the impressions of what it beholds. Instead of receiving identity from Above, it derives identity from below.
Its desires become earthbound.
Its wisdom becomes earthbound.
Its fears become earthbound.
Its ambitions become earthbound.
Its appetites become earthbound.
Its glory becomes earthbound.
This is why decorating fallen Nefesh with religion cannot produce New Creation.
The problem is the government itself.
James makes the architecture explicit:
“This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.”
— James 3:15
Earthly.
Psychikē — soulish / natural.
Demoniac.
Once the receiver is moved away from the Voice of God and taught to interpret reality independently, another wisdom enters the human world. The Tree looked desirable. The eyes perceived. The desire awakened. The hand grasped. The Nefesh judged.
And death began to reign.
REPENTANCE IS A CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT
This gives repentance extraordinary depth.
The Greek metanoia involves a transformation of mind, perception, and orientation. Biblical repentance certainly includes turning from sin. Its implications reach into the very government from which we attempt to live.
Repentance says:
I renounce myself as Source.
I repent of interpreting reality only according to appearances.
I repent of allowing fear to govern me.
I repent of allowing appetite to define me.
I repent of allowing earthly identity to name me.
I repent of attempting to manufacture righteousness.
I repent of trying to produce spiritual Life through soulish strength.
I repent of making my Nefesh the throne.
Not merely: Forgive this action.
But: Father, I renounce the fallen Adamic source from which this action proceeded.
This is why Jesus speaks so radically concerning psychē:
“He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.”
— John 12:25
The word translated life here is psychē — the Greek counterpart often associated with Hebrew Nefesh.
The mystery is not the destruction of personality.
It is the surrender of autonomous psychē-government.
The old throne must be abandoned.
The lower fountain must be forsaken.
The earthly Adam cannot remain our governing identity while Christ becomes merely an addition to our lives.
Jesus becomes our Life.
THE CROSS ENDS THE CLAIM OF THE OLD ADAM
Paul does not describe Christianity as Adam receiving assistance. He announces crucifixion:
“Our old man was crucified with Him…”
— Romans 6:6
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…”
— Galatians 2:20
The Cross exposes the impossibility of reforming autonomous Adam into the New Humanity.
Something must die.
Something must rise.
New Creation cannot be reduced to becoming a more disciplined version of our former selves. The Cross terminates the old claim to independent government. Resurrection establishes another order.
THE MAN FROM ABOVE
“The second man is the Lord from heaven.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:47
Christ comes from Above.
His Life proceeds from the Father.
His words proceed from the Father.
His works reveal the Father.
His identity rests in the Father.
The Son does not present independence as maturity. He reveals perfect sonship as perfect reception and expression.
Fallen humanity imagines maturity as becoming increasingly self-sufficient.
The Kingdom reveals the opposite mystery:
The perfect Son lives from the Father.
Jesus therefore becomes the pattern and Head of an entirely New Humanity.
Not humanity separated from God.
Not humanity competing with God.
Not humanity trying to become its own source.
But humanity living from God, through God, and unto God.
GOD IS RUACH
“God is Spirit.”
— John 4:24
The Father is Ruach.
Therefore the New Humanity cannot ultimately be governed by merely earthly perception. If our Father is Spirit, His children must learn to receive from Him by the Spirit.
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
— John 3:6
Born of Ruach → spirit.
We do not become God, nor do we cease to be embodied human creatures. By grace we are born from Above and brought into living participation in the Life of God through Christ.
Our deepest identity is no longer determined by the fallen Adamic order.
We have received Life from Above.
The Father fathers.
The Ruach gives Life.
The human ruach receives.
And the Nefesh learns submission to this new government.
THE NEW RUACH CREATURE
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
The New Creation is not the old creature receiving better information. There is a new principle of Life within.
The human ruach awakened toward God becomes the inward place of reception, communion, witness, and spiritual Life.
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
— Romans 8:16
His Spirit → our spirit.
Ruach witnesses with ruach.
The Father is no longer merely an external theological concept. Through the Spirit of adoption we cry:
“Abba, Father.”
— Romans 8:15
This is the consciousness of New Creation. We are being taught to live as children receiving from the Father from Above.
THE RUACH IS RECEIVER, NOT SOURCE
Even the regenerated human ruach does not become the ultimate Source.
God alone remains Fountain.
Therefore our architecture is never: ruach → self-supply.
It remains:
Father
↓
Christ
↓
Ruach
↓
human ruach
↓
Nefesh
↓
body
↓
creation
The Father supplies through Christ.
The Ruach communicates divine Life.
Our ruach receives.
The Nefesh is renewed.
The body becomes an instrument of righteousness.
Creation encounters the fruit.
This is the opposite of the Fall.
The Fall says: Receiver, become Source.
Grace says: Receiver, return to the Fountain.
THE NEFESH MUST COME DOWN FROM THE THRONE
Here is where many believers struggle.
We may possess the Ruach while continuing habitually to interpret life through the old government of Nefesh.
The Spirit says Life. The Nefesh remembers death.
The Spirit says sonship. The Nefesh remembers rejection.
The Spirit says provision. The Nefesh sees scarcity.
The Spirit says forgiveness. The Nefesh demands condemnation.
The Spirit says Christ is sufficient. The Nefesh attempts to prove itself.
The warfare is therefore often a war of government.
Who interprets reality?
Who names us?
Who supplies us?
Who defines truth?
Who occupies the throne?
The answer of New Creation must continually become: Ruach.
Not emotion.
Not appetite.
Not appearance.
Not fear.
Not human praise.
Not human condemnation.
Not the old memories of Adam.
The Ruach of God reveals Christ, and our ruach receives what proceeds from Him.
THE SWORD DIVIDES THE TWO GOVERNMENTS
“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword… piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit…”
— Hebrews 4:12
Psychē and pneuma.
Nefesh and ruach.
The Sword reveals the source.
Is this arising from earthly fear — or heavenly Life?
Is this the old Adam defending himself — or Christ expressing Himself?
Is this Nefesh attempting to control — or ruach receiving?
Is this produced by anxiety — or proceeding from faith?
Is this self-righteous striving — or obedience arising from grace?
The Sword does not divide Nefesh from ruach because the soul must be destroyed.
It divides so that divine order can be restored.
The Nefesh is a wonderful servant.
It is a disastrous god.
THE HIGHER SANCTIFIES THE LOWER
Here is the great mystery:
God does not ask fallen Nefesh to produce Ruach.
Ruach comes from Above to sanctify Nefesh below.
Religion says: Earth → Effort → Heaven.
Grace reveals: Heaven → Ruach → Humanity → Earth.
The mind cannot think itself into divine Life.
The emotions cannot feel themselves into holiness.
The will cannot discipline itself into resurrection.
The flesh cannot manufacture Spirit.
Something from Above must govern what is below.
The ruach drinks from Ruach.
Then the renewed mind begins thinking according to Christ.
The desires become reordered.
The emotions become sanctified.
The imagination becomes purified.
The will becomes obedient.
The body becomes an instrument of righteousness.
The lower is not permitted to govern the higher.
The higher governs and sanctifies the lower.
Grace does not annihilate humanity.
Grace puts humanity back into divine order.
The old order was:
Nefesh → Self → Control → Death
The New Creation order is:
Father → Christ → Ruach → human ruach → renewed Nefesh → body → creation
WORSHIP IN RUACH AND TRUTH
Now John 4:24 becomes enormous.
The woman asks about mountains: this mountain or Jerusalem?
Jesus answers by revealing a new order. Neither geographical mountain is the ultimate secret. The Father seeks worshipers whose worship proceeds from Spirit and Truth.
Religion continually attempts to locate God primarily outside: a building, a mountain, a ritual, a system, a human mediator, a performance.
Jesus reveals the Father seeking communion with humanity in Spirit and Truth.
This does not abolish embodied worship or gathered community. It establishes their Source.
True worship must proceed from the Life of God received within.
Ruach → ruach → worship.
The Father supplies.
The child receives.
The child responds.
CHILDREN OF THE FATHER FROM ABOVE
The deepest reality of the New Creation is sonship.
We are not spiritual orphans attempting to imitate our Father from a distance. The Spirit of the Son has been given.
“Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba, Father!’”
— Galatians 4:6
The Father sends the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, producing the cry of sonship.
The New Humanity lives from Abba.
We receive identity from Abba.
We receive Life from Abba.
We receive grace from Abba.
We receive correction from Abba.
We receive wisdom from Abba.
We receive strength from Abba.
We receive our inheritance from Abba.
This is Ruach fathering: not the creation of independent little sources, but children continually living from the One Source.
FROM THE IMAGE OF THE EARTHLY TO THE IMAGE OF THE HEAVENLY
“As we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:49
The Gospel is an image transfer.
The fallen Adam bears the earthly.
The New Humanity bears Christ.
The old gaze descends.
The new gaze ascends.
And as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are “transformed into the same image from glory to glory… by the Spirit of the Lord.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:18
Who performs the transformation?
The Ruach.
The Nefesh does not transform itself into Christ.
The Ruach transforms the human person through participation in Christ.
FORSAKE THE LOWER GOVERNMENT
Therefore Christ’s call to lose the psychē becomes an invitation into freedom.
Forsake the old government.
Forsake self-source.
Forsake the necessity of controlling everything.
Forsake identity built from appearances.
Forsake righteousness manufactured through self-effort.
Forsake the old Adam as the definition of who you are.
Forsake the Tree from which autonomous Nefesh continually attempts to eat.
And receive.
Receive Christ.
Receive Grace.
Receive Ruach.
Receive Chayyim.
Receive the Father’s Word.
Receive the Father’s identity.
Receive the Father’s government.
Receive the Father’s Life.
The mystery of repentance is therefore:
Turn from below.
Receive from Above.
SOD HA SOD
The deepest repentance is not merely: I regret what I did.
It becomes: I renounce the fallen source from which I was living.
The deepest salvation is not merely: My sins have been forgiven.
It becomes: Christ has become my Life.
The deepest worship is not merely: I perform something religious for God.
It becomes: I receive from the Father by His Ruach and return to Him the Life He first supplied.
The Fall was a movement downward:
God’s glory exchanged for created image → earthly → psychikos → corruption → mavet.
Salvation brings another government:
Father → Christ → Ruach → human ruach → sanctified Nefesh → sanctified body → creation filled with glory.
The earthly must no longer father the heavenly.
The heavenly must father the earthly.
The First Adam was of the earth.
The Second Man is from heaven.
The fallen Nefesh looks below and outward for its life.
The New Creation receives from Above.
God is Ruach.
We are born of Ruach.
His Ruach bears witness with our ruach.
Our Nefesh comes down from the throne.
Christ becomes our Life.
The Father becomes our Fountain.
TODAY’S DIRECTIVE
Repent of the government of the earthly Nefesh.
Live from the ruach by the Ruach.
Be the New Humanity from Above.
Lose the government of Nefesh.
Receive the government of Ruach.
Live as a child fathered from Above.
The First Adam cannot be our fountain when the Last Adam has become our Life.
“That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
— John 3:6
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
— John 4:24
“As we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:49
